Assessing Your Budget
One of the biggest factors in deciding to do a remodel is the cost. It is what keeps most people away from tackling such a major project. But if you do your research and prepare, you can get a kitchen remodel done that will fit into your budget.
One of the first things you need to do is look at your budget. Be honest about what you think you can afford. When doing a kitchen remodel, most homeowners spend between $13,000 up to $37,000. The average kitchen remodel sits at around $25,000. While the expense associated with a kitchen remodel has ballooned over the last few years, there is a lot of wiggle room to make your budget work. You will need to decide what your priorities are in your remodel, and know what you will have to skip in the remodel.
Breaking down the cost of a remodel will depend on what your focus is, how big your space is, your budget, etc. But you want to have a general idea of where your money is going to go. While every home will vary, generally you can plan on your over half your budget breaking down in this way:
30% - Cabinetry and hardware
15%- Appliances and ventilation
Those three items will generally eat the bulk of your budget during a remodel. The other part that will take a bite out of your budget is the installation, or labor costs. Those generally hover around 17% of your budget. The rest of the budget is divided amongst design fees, lighting, door and windows, flooring, wall and ceilings and faucets and plumbing.
With the top three items, (cabinetry, appliances and countertops), getting most of the attention, it leaves a lot of way to save on costs in the other areas. For example, you might want to put a nice stone countertop on the main gathering area of your kitchen, but on the side counters and ones that are hidden, you could install a laminate or tile countertop. Being open to creative options and cost saving alternatives will help you keep you on budget.
Full Remodel vs. Partial Remodel
If you plan on staying in the home for a long time, give yourself a kitchen you love. It will add not only value to your home, but also can bring peace and contentment to you when you are home. If you plan on selling in a few years, aim to do a basic kitchen remodel, that will give you an edge in the real estate market, but won’t cause you to lose money when you sell. No matter what your budget, you can find a way to make your kitchen more livable for you.
